Wolf Mother

"Wolf Mother"

This rather bizarre sculpture is to be found in a typically Parisian little square bearing the jaunty name of Square Paul Painlevé (Paul Risenbread!)

It's all to do with some Roman legend, which I no expert on, about a couple of twins being nursed by a she-wolf. Whatever the origins it makes you look twice and I'd be interested to hear a parent explaining to their curious kids just what it's supposed to represent.

There are apparently versions of this statue all over the place, the world I mean, and it's this sort of thing that adds to the charm of the place and livens up an afternoon stroll around the city. But then you knew that, didn't you?

Photography Lesson - "Fishing For Complements"

"Fishing For Complements"

On the corner of rue du Chat Qui Pêche (or Fishing Cat street), a tiny little passage more the size of a mountain stream than a typical Parisian street, is a collection of pussy-related pictures, postcards and posters.

Almost certainly not a coincidence, but nevertheless a pleasing repetition of the theme for any observant passing snapper.

And quite apart from that obvious theme, you've got some lovely eroded brickwork, a bent-out-of-shape water pipe, and even an Eiffel Tower t-shirt to remind us where we are, after all! (not to mention the topless girl for the boys...)

Throw in a jaunty angle, crop carefully, zap it up a bit, and there you have it - a genuinely interesting photo grabbed from a grotty old street corner - marvellous!

"Scratching In The Spotlight"

On the 21st of June in Paris everyone fills the streets to enjoy the melodies, and sometimes god-awful racket, flowing from every street corner as part of the Fête de la Musique, our annual free music extravaganza.

Well, not everyone. Just off the beaten track of boulevard St. Michel, in the Jardin du Luxembourg, we find plenty of laid-back Parisians enjoying the warming rays of the longest day. It's always strange to think that the nights will get longer from now on, when you don't really feel that summer has even begun yet.

But there it is. The legendary Jardin du Luxembourg, inspiration for countless monochrome photos of weathered gents leaning on walking sticks and solitary iron chairs contemplating still lakes and life.

These days there's always a bunch of weird sculptures round by the orangery, and I'm quickly itching to get my camera out whenever I go there...

Photography Lesson - "All In A Mood"

"All In A Mood"

There's something special about days when peole just lie down on the ground in the middle of a public place and snooze.

I was reading a funky book recently where the guy recommends just suddenly lying down in the middle of the street for ten seconds then getting up and carrying on, as a way of gaining confidence and not caring about what others think. Must try it someday. In the meantime I'll content myself with photos of those who do.

Maybe it's the long shadows, or the arm thrown lazily across the eyes or the presence of water... but whatever elements go to make up this gentle scene, there is a definite mood, and conveying a mood is an important concept in photography...
